Seiont Nurseries are continuing to blaze a trail of new plants, with production of their new Blechnum brasiliense ‘Volcano’ which this Plant Enthusiast fell in love with when it was on Show at Four Oaks.
Blechnum brasiliense is also known as the dwarf Brazilian tree fern.
Blechnum brasiliense as the name suggests comes from Brazil, and this gives a clue about the hardiness of this new plant, it is only hardy to -3C and so is rated by The Plant Enthusiast as H3 using the new RHS Hardiness Rating. This means it will need to be overwintered in a conservatory or frost free environment in all but the very mildest areas of the UK.
As the image (which was supplied by Seiont) suggests the fronds are singly pinnate and grow up to 30 inches in length. Both the unfurling fronds and those that are mature have a superb deep burgundy colour.
The plants, which are being grown as sporelings will be available to the trade as liners in 2015, expect to see it in Garden Centres in 2016.
