Trollius ‘Dancing Flame’ from Darby Nursery Stock and Fairweather’s Nursery has beaten off stiff competition from over 120 other new plants to win the New Plant Awards at the Horticulture Trades Association (HTA) National Plant Show (2014).
Bred by Patrick Fairweather, Trollius Dancing Flame has striking bright orange open flowers and sturdy upright stems with more pronounced sepals making it really stand out. With good bud colour and clean foliage this compact and hardy Trollius is easy to grow and is suited to any moist good soil in a sun or part shade position. Launched at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2014 it is is more floriflorus than other varieties and also re-blooms throughout the season.
This is a truly hardy perennial that will brighten up the dullest of gardens.
National Plant Show Judging Panel member and HTA President Stan Green comments, “Trollius ‘Dancing Flame’ has great appeal with its vibrant colour, dramatic flowers and upright form making it a fantastic plant for any herbaceous border. It has a real ‘wow factor’ and I am sure will be a popular choice for garden centre customers when it comes to market next year.”
He adds, “With a huge number of entries to the New Plant Awards this year the judges were faced with some extremely tough decisions – not least picking the best in show plant from the category winners. After viewing the plants in natural light Trollius ‘Dancing Flame’ with its glimmering and vivid flowers came out on top, with Hydrangea ‘Miss Saori’ a very close second.”
There are around 30 different species of Trollius, native to stream banks and wet meadows in the mountains of Europe, Northern Asia and North America.
